I'm down in the central belt, and I have never eaten a deep fried mars bar - nor has anyone else I know.
Im honestly starting to think this is an urban myth.

10/16, not too shabby. Somewhere in my family tree there are roots in Scotland, clearly that's given me an intuit knowledge of the culture. :thumb:

Some of those questions are quite stupid, this one is quite good as he lives in the
    Bahamas
    , yet hes a nationalist.

Proud Scottish Nationalist and Scottish icon Sir Sean Connery lives where?

I'm from Glasgow, I've only had one Deep Fried Mars Bar. It was awesome.
There's a chippy near my parents that will deep fry anything for you for £1. You just take it in, they'll cover it in batter and toss it in the frier.

Deep fried mini creme eggs are superb. As is deep fried Irn Bru ice cream.

Considering the content and tone of the rest of your post, what was the point in the spoiler? :hehe:

The ingredients are worse than that, it's principally made from lard which is why you see "vegetarian butteries" sold by some shops. My sister was a baker for years and never ate a buttery again after she saw them being made.

I think it should be noted that Scottish food was supposed to fortify you for a day of hard work in harsh conditions while making the best use of what little they had which is why it has such high calorie and fat contents. The buttery was intended for fisherman as it packs a lot of calories into something small and easy to store. The story goes the flat round shape is so they could be thrown to the fisherman frisbee style so you did not have to get your feet wet. It was common for my grandparents generation to have a dresser with a tin lined porridge drawer. A batch of porridge was made and poured into the draw and left to set. You then got a slice of porridge for your breakfast and maybe lunch too.

I don't think I have ever been in a chippy and seen one on the menu.

We do have a fairly heavy net presence for our numbers.

I always reckoned it's the lack of sunlight and general remoteness a lot of people live in.

The Nordic countries are all fairly similar, with huge net presences given that they have small populations. Just from experience, I feel like it's as common to encounter a Finn or a Dane on the net as it is a Spaniard or a German.

You think so? I've always felt we are under represented, both online and IRL (In the media, for example.)

In the media, sure. But online? I don't think so. There are 1.5 billion people using the internet, and 57% of the 'net is in English. You're talking about being in a sea of hundreds of millions of people who're using English, and we're 5.2 million. I come across Scots quite regularly on most national and international forums.

A factoid is precisely what that is, because that is false but oft-repeated.

    False for two reasons:

    1. The number quoted when that stat is called up is 300,000,000 - the US now has a population of approximately 315,000,000
    2. The number being quoted is of people who are learning some degree of English, not of those who can actually speak the langauge.

edit: I was 5 million off on the US population.

edit2: What at least I find interesting is that the EU is only about 10 million of the US in terms of numbers of people who speak English, now obviously this is a much lower percentage with the EU being so much larger, but still, it's interesting to think that there's almost as many fluent English speakers in the EU as there are in the US.

    You call that english? :D

I'm always amazed at the number of people that state they're "fluent" in English, but when you hear them speak...ooooh brother :eeek:

You'll have to take those numbers with a boatload of salt.
