To be honest, the Windows Firewall is enough for most people. It basically stops any incoming packet - which is what firewalls generally do.
OK we now have 2 paid for Softwares in the list but they are both quite cheep i.e. under £20 Nv GPU Pro and Xpadder. I made the exception as they are both very good and inexpensive software that are great for us gamers
Hmm found some great remote control App for android to PC controlling (like HTPC uses) What do you guys think should I stat adding a few of these free+paid for full version softwares to the list?
Added Media Monkey as I do not like iTunes and use a iTouch. Best thing Apple ever made and it saved the company (iPod).
Just added this handy tool for backing up your windows activations: Advanced Tokens Manager Enjoy the freeware
Keep it freeware if you can : the paid-for software - maybe put in a separate post. If you put shareware or trial versions on the list, it'll just be annoying to find the limitations on usage. (that's my opinion anyway) Surprised that cdburnerxp isn't up there http://cdburnerxp.se/en/home
Always feel a bit nervous suggesting software to others, as they may have a differing opinion on how useful it is But here are some suggestions all the same.. Classic Shell TestDisk From the same people who program TestDisk is... PhotoRec EasyBCD I use it for setting multi boot options on recovery media. Virtual-Clonedrive (similar to daemon-tools but without the clutter) Sumatra PDF Regshot Not sure if those will be of use to others, feel free to ignore them if there not
http://www.nirsoft.net/ I use this website alot, there is alot of good stuff on there for doing network admin type stuff. And there is some good outlook tools (nkredit, mailpassview).
Surprised to see Everything hasn't been mentioned yet. Probably one of the most handy (if not the most handy) pieces of software I've ever used. I use it all the time, can't imagine what using my PC would be without it. I have it bound to a hotkey with AutoHotKey (also not mentioned!) Basically it's a super fast file search engine, I use it to get to programs and folders all the time, instead of browsing to them.
As a programmer, I find Cygwin invaluable. Having a proper shell language available like Bash makes CLI use much easier, plus all common GNU tools are available, along with common programming tools like git or perl. Not to mention having GCC available if required. Still, this fits firmly in the 'development' category and is of no use to most people.
Updated, didnt add all like pay for soft ware and the linux thing. can add it if there is actually interest for that kind of stuff. BTW: do we have an Andriod sub-forum? I would like to add some Adriod links but this is not really the place for that.
Universal SSH/Telnet/Rsh/RDP/VNC/FTP/SFTP client with builtin cygwin and XWindows server, so you just enable X forwarding, connect to your server and voila, X works without the need to configure lots of stuff. Free, if you don't mind some of the customization and feature limitations (like only 3 port forwardings set up via user friendly GUI) : http://mobaxterm.mobatek.net/features.html
Just like to say I made the mistake of using link to Spybot search and destroy instead of Ninite and now I got toolbar hell in firefox. Took me a while to fix but I have definitely learned my lesson. Always use Ninite!
