Good mods know how to effectively wield a banhammer. Frankly, mods getting weird with it is not something I care to think about.

Diplomacy and self-restraint, same as any position of authority and peacekeeping - also why all those jobs suck like an airplane toilet. Those three or four times a day you lose your temper a bit and are short with people? Out of the question. That one time in three months you get curt and snap at somebody who's incessantly rude and ignorant? Too harsh. From what I've seen, you basically have to have infinite patience - like it's as much self-moderation as anything else. And ask anyone who's worked first line phone centres - constant self-restraint drives you insane. Most tasks risk burnout, but moderation guarantees it. Probably why I haven't been asked... I've said some things that, while I do agree with what I said, I may have worded it improperly, or said it too soon or late.
^^^ Hammer hits nail on head. My patience had run out, so my final act of self-moderation was to discharge myself from that role. It is something all moderators are expected to do when that time comes.
Whilst we're talking practically let me be serious and preachy for a moment. Without sounding too kissy, the mods on here do a great job in general. But so do we. One of the reasons this community is so highly regarded and enjoyable is the level of self-moderation naturally practiced by the majority of its members. The mod team are there as a last resort of course, but who was the last active member you can recall being banned? It doesn't happen a lot, because the ***** are weeded out and rejected by us, before the mods even need to intervene. I like that, long may it continue.
Indeed, and that is how it should be. A good community polices itself, and you have to trust people to be adults. This is why I always preferred to hold back from intervening right away --if you wait a bit, usually the membership sorts things out for themselves quite well.
Last member I have any recollection of being banned was that Hippo guy I think. That seems like a long time ago though.
thehippoz and dwarfer [I think that was his name] are the only high-profile modslaps I can recall... both were modslapped by nexxo iirc...
Yeah, it was Dwarfer. Don't remember exactly what he was saying, but it involved personally attacking a fellow forumite.
