Thought We (if we dont already) should have one of these threads where we can brag about our servers and or HTPCs. Pics or it didnt happen Post a pic and give a small description Ill start. (pic ripped from google, ill post one once its daylight....) XPS 420 - Q6600 @ 2.4GHz, 4GB DDR2 800, 500 GB SATA HD Ubuntu 8.10 running Samba, Transmission (WebUI), XBMC, and OpenSSH (soon to dual boot with Win7 Beta) Thats my server and HTPC atm, but will be my HTPC only once I can replace a mobo for a P4...
my server (well, my housemates): opteron dualcore 2ghz with 1GB of RAM running win2k8 server enterprise. 250GB OS/data disc and a 500GB RAID 1 for storage. HTPC: e7200 and gigabyte g45 mATX mobo with 2GB of RAM and wifi, BD/HDDVD combo drive, 320GB HDD. housed in a black antec fusion modded for silence with scythe s-flex low rpm fans and acoustifoam in as many places as i could cram it. thermalright heatsink. the LCD display on the fusion (the black one) is useless so it's unplugged. bought the MS MCE remote/receiver and use that for receiving codes sent from my logitech harmony 895 RF remote (god i love not needing line of sight). the 320GB drive in HTPC will probably go into a WHS when my housemate leaves, and i'll put a 2.5" drive in the HTPC to reduce the noise down even further (yes, it would seem that the HDD is the loudest thing in my HTPC). won't need a very large one as most of the storage will be on the WHS; i plan to have at least 2TB on that.
Hows WHS working for you? I havent looked at it, but I saw Win Server 2008 RC2 and that was a PITFA to get going and stable...
not got WHS yet. i know a few people who run it and can't be happier with it, and i have researched it extensively and am pretty excited about setting one up. i agree about win2k8 being awful. i hate the thing, but it's my housemate's so meh. it's just plain overkill for a home server.
lol, i agree. I like the options, like IIS but trying to set it up was just a bitc*... you know? just over kill. hence why im running linux now I heard WHS was a bit like Vista in the fact that for a home server it doesnt have enough options and is a resource hog? Is it possible to stream any media from it? Just the google stuff i managed to pull on WHS said some pretty bad stuff about it. Im still waiting to look at it... the UI looks nice though
My HTPC is the HFX passive cooled system that was reviewed right here on Bit-Tech. Silent passively cooled goodness and 1Tb storage = 700 hours of video.
tbh, the only things i'll be using WHS for are storage, squeezecenter and torrents. there are plenty of torrent addins for WHS ( and btw it's basically win2k3 with a friendly skin), and the software RAID solution it provides is hands down the best thing i've seen for storage in a long, long while. so for me, it's ideal.
my system is a bit aging now... amd Be-2350 gigabyte 690G board ati 2600XT fanless 2x500gb Samsungs hauppauge twin tuner freeview card 2gb ram wireless keyboard LG bluray/HD-DVD combo drive in a thermaltake lanbox lite running XP + squeezecenter and softqueeze for music which i use with a spqueeze controller or via a webserver.... And GBPVR for everything else.
I thought i had a pic of my server and a seperate pic of my HTPC here on my laptop (im at work) but unfortauntly i dont so youll have to wait for those. You can however see a nice pic of the server thats at work.... There are 2 screens on the right hand side that i couldnt get in, plus the camera on my phone sucks. as for the server at home... its a cheapy thing that i threw together; 512Meg DDR2 2.4Ghz Celeron, 1TB RAID 5 - 3x 500Gb Seagates (needs a 4th as its almost full) 2x network cards (one Gigabit ethernet, one standard Fast ethernet) I use it as my gateway, router, SSH server, LAMP server and Apache server so its a jack of all trades at the moment. As for the HTPC, its just a standard old laptop thats running vista with a XBMC front end.
indeed it would, the scarey thing is that there are 5 such "computers" in the room where that one is located. in reality it is 4 computers stacked together and linked via a KVM switch but 16 monitors is a bit much to play with. Its really srange sitting in the middle of them i can assure you!
I think I would need to take frequent breaks otherwise my eyes would start to bleed and head would hurt Post mine when I get home
