Linux What is this Linux thing?

in linux can you turn HDD's off or "power save"?? i've only dealt with servers and never thought about it until now, i normally run CentOS or Suse.

Openoffice is the gateway drug to full-on Linux. Microsoft pushed me that way by releasing the latest Office version, so I thought, if I have to try something new, might as well be free!

Then my XP install went kersplat, and I'm sitting here using Ubuntu thinking: 'Do I REALLY want to go back to Windows?'. As usual, the drawback is all my games and apps that run on XP. Example, I did manage to get Photoshop working on Ubuntu thru WINE - but struggling to get the graphics tablet to work properly!

So I have a new found respect for any developers who make their software compatible with Linux as they are the only reason I still choose Windows. And of course hats off to all the skilled volunteers making all this great free software in the first place- there is some good in the world

Yeah, you should just need to install it:

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg x-window-system-core

Should give you the basic X window manager.

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg x-window-system-core gnome gdm

Should give you X with the gnome desktop/window manager.

I'm sure more knowledgeable people than me can correct that if it's wrong.

 

I think Ubuntu's "preferred" gui is KDE, but other than that, the above should work.

 

Nah ubuntu is focused on gnome, kuduntu is the KDE version.

Ubuntu uses gnome, but its moving to Unity desktop. Kubuntu ships with KDE

Unity is awful in my opinion - as well as Linus Torvalds'. It makes getting to your favourite software quicker, but has the major drawback of being so much harder to access your other software. And, as Linus pointed out, makes it hard to start a second instance of a program. Instead of the standard Applications button, followed by a scroll over the category, then the program - it has been changed to Massive-Button-in-the-Left-Corner, then Massive-Magnifying-Glass-Icon, then Show more, followed by the application.

Thankfully, Ubuntu has the option at log-in to switch to Ubuntu Classic. This uses the old Gnome 2 interface with panels (task bars). I personally use this arrangement, but when Ubuntu becomes Unity only, I'm switching to a different distro.

 

Unity...

I don't like Unity neither. It looks too much like tablet UI... So I use normal Gnome desktop. Unity is not for computers, it is for tablets.

 

I thought Linus' gripe was with GNOME Shell, I didn't know he said anything on Unity?

 

Tried Ubuntu with Unity, quickly got rid of and went to Fedora 15

 

Ya, shell seems far more polished than Unity, and with a few extensions you can get it working a lot like gnome 2.

 

In fairness I've never really got on with Ubuntu, have had more luck with vanilla Debian and Fedora.
