so theres been a dev QA session, some interesting tidbits.

Has mankind, by the year 2205, overcome the environmental questions that were the main focus in the year 2070? Or will be sustainable development still a main concern in Anno 2205?

Story wise environmental topics are still part of the future world in ANNO, but they are no longer part of the core game play aspects. We liked the idea in ANNO 2070 to save/endanger the climate, but it caused some troubles with the core mechanics and the look and feel of the game. That’s why we did not focus on this aspect of ANNO 2070 again.

To advance in each sector, are we going to complete missions? And is there an end mission in each sector, which after it is just free build?

Even though there is a main storyline, you are always free to build whatever you want in every sector you unlocked. The storyline illustrates the basic unlock mechanisms provided by the ANNO game play. It does not force the player to do things that are not related to the core ANNO game just for story purposes. For example you may be asked to reach a new civilization level to advance further but you’ll never need to collect boxes protected by scanner units to move on. These kind of fun tasks are part of optional game play elements like random quests or specific mini campaigns inside each maps.

In Anno 2070, we had buildings that were very futuristic and cool (at least my opinion), with varying shapes and sizes. But from what we can see so far in Anno 2205, most of the Earth buildings appear to be glass blocks which look very similar to current day buildings. Was there a reason for this art direction?

Our goal was to create a more comprehensible and down-to-earth city life compared to 2070. We felt that players sometimes had difficulties to relate to their urban city areas in 2070 because they were a little too futuristic, abstract and toy-like now and then. So we toned down the futuristic aspect a bit for the residences. Concerning the public buildings and facilities, we went for more epic and futuristic designs instead.

The moon colonies will be full cities or only industrial parks? What advantages can humans obtain from colonizing the moon?

The moon colonies are not real cities. The moon still is a hostile environment to be tamed by the player, not a place offering quality of life for ordinary people, even though in one game world a moon hotel for the upper class can be raised by the player. So the moon colonies are in their core industrial parks that are run by brave colonists, the players settle there to harvest important resources like rare earths or helium-3 that is processed to fusion power, which is the key to solve mankind’s energy problems.

I hear that the game will be more “easy” to learn and fast paced. Does this mean that its complexity (in which my opinion, resides the beauty of the game) is gone?

Anno, in all its instalments, has always been a complex building strategy game and so is Anno 2205. We did not strive to reduce the complexity of the Anno gameplay. Due to the simultaneous multi-session concept, we had to tone down the session specific complexity, because otherwise the overall complexity would have been largely extended compared to Anno 2070, which is something we did not want. A lot of complexity is now rooted in the existence and combination of multiple parallel sectors. It is different but it is not less complex. On the other hand a lot of design details inherited by the previous Anno instalments led to a certain complicacy that should not be mistaken for complexity and was an obstacle for newcomers to the brand. This was something we actively reduced, like e.g. creating routes with only half of the clicks than before.

How is the warehouse function going to work?

To initiate a settlement on an island the player still has to build a warehouse (called distribution center in Anno 2205). The distribution center enables the player to build everywhere on the island. All buildings start operating when connected via street to the distribution center. This leads to a more natural city layout and removes the isolated groups of buildings from previous Anno games. To add depth and believability a logistic system is modifying the effectiveness of the street and building layouts chosen by the player. In addition the warehouses have been redesigned due to the new multi-session concept. In previous Anno games warehouses were storing the goods per island, in Anno 2205 the distribution centers store the goods per sector. In previous Anno games players were creating routes to ship goods between islands, in Anno 2205 players create routes to ship goods between sectors. As a side effect the game becomes more accessible within the first sector but retains its usual complexity as the game play unfolds between multiple sectors.

Are there going to be alien factions?

Short answer: no. Long version: the Anno series is creating believable worlds. Introducing aliens to our world is not unbelievable per se, but it would take a lot of explanation and preparation to include this into a plot without ruining the believable Sci-Fi scenario. Anno 2205 is more focused on player freedom and continuous gameplay than on narrative and story. That’s why we decided not to introduce aliens to the brand. Even though we all know they must be out there somewhere, that’s for sure.

There won’t be any direct interaction with enemy factions (except for crisis sectors). But will the AI have their own islands so we can trade with them? Or is there any other way to interact with AI?

Just like in the other Anno games, there are different kinds of third parties: Advisors, Traders, Rivals and Enemies. What’s new is that these parties no longer expand within the game worlds, e.g. to compete with the player over unsettled islands. This decision was made because in Anno 2205, the player controls multiple persistent play sessions at the same time. If these sessions contained AIs, we would end up with another dynamic which would have forced players to switch between sessions constantly. Too many of these dynamics would have had disrupted the flow of the game, which is something we wanted to avoid.

With this being said, Anno 2205 offers many opportunities to interact with the AI: Advisors will guide you and introduce you to the world of 2205. A powerful enemy will try to interfere with your plans and can be fought in crisis sectors or via side quests. There will be trading posts in all regions, where you will be able to exchange goods or accept missions. Mighty rivals will claim sectors which you can take over if you have enough political influence and financial backing. These companies also provide you with smaller or bigger missions in special sectors. The player is never alone; there is a lot to do in Anno 2205.

In the images and footage we’ve seen so far, we could already make out several ship types – even though I guess they are only here for aesthetical purposes. In how far will ships still play a role in Anno 2205?

Ships have always played a huge role in Anno games and they still do. As you will now manage multiple sectors simultaneously in Anno 2205, the relevance of ships within a single sector has been toned down. Creating and managing trade routes is now done on the strategy map, which combines the different sectors on Earth, the Arctic and the Moon. This means that routes no longer connect islands within a map, but different sectors and regions instead. Depending on which kind of routes you establish, your harbors will be populated by container ships, icebreakers or shuttles. You won’t have to control these ships within a sector, but you will have a commando ship which serves to claim new islands and fulfill various missions.

Also, you will improve your naval forces in Anno 2205. As your economic empire grows, so will your war fleet which you can control to complete missions in crisis sectors and to gain additional resources. However, if you are not interested in sea fights and skirmishes, you can get these resources through other means such as general growth and side quests. Military gameplay is an optional element, just like it has always been in Anno.

I haven’t seen them yet, but will there be air transports? I remember that the explanation why there were ships in Anno 2050, but no planes was not very convincing…

In Anno 2205 goods will be transported by land, sea and air. This is especially important when it comes to delivering goods to the Moon. In order to build the necessary infrastructure up there, the player will first have to construct a space port and then set up pretty expensive shuttle transports to the moon and back. Space travel is a very costly endeavor. While researching on this topic, we frequentlylhat huge costs are one of the biggest obstacles to overcome for space travel. This is something we wanted to represent in the gameplay. Players will be able to choose between shuttles of different sizes, which affect transport capacities and costs.

How can resources by refilled? Will to be done with gold like in 1404 or via research like in 2070?

As you progressed through older Anno games, refilling resources turned into a very repetitive gameplay element which never posed a substantial challenge. This is why we decided that all resources on building spots will be infinite. You will not have to refill them. However, the number of building spots per island and sector is limited. This limitation will create a real challenge during the end game phase, as your empire keeps on growing: Which building spot will I use to get which resource? Which island or sector contains enough building spots for the resource type I so desperately need?

Let’s talk energy supply. When I construct a wind park on an island, will the generated energy by available globally or only on the island like in Anno 2070?

Neither is the case, actually. The energy you generate on an island will be available on all islands in the same sector. So the area you’ll supply with energy is bigger than in Anno 2070, but you still won’t generate a global supply, because you will control multiple sectors as you progress through the game. You will set up energy routes via upgraded space ports to make the energy available across the entire globe and transfer it from one game session to the next.

You’ve mentioned that you did away with classic influence areas for public buildings like the stadium. Does that mean you only need one of these building per city? Or is the capacity of these buildings somehow limited?

The support capacity of public buildings is limited. As your city grows, you will need more than one public building of each type. As there are no influence radiuses, however, you have much more options to optimize you city structure. For once, you no longer have to build circular cities.
As a rule of thumb: The bigger the street distance between a public building and a residential building, the less effective your provision will be. If you wish to optimize your supply from public buildings, you will want to arrange your residential buildings closely around a public building that provides for them. If you prefer a different and more open layout for your city, however, you can ignore this advice. Be prepared to construct more buildings, though! Otherwise, your supply might be insufficient and you risk making you citizens rather unhappy.

How do the Artic regions differ from normal regions on Earth? Can you find different resources there? Does the Arctic population have other needs for you to satisfy?

The Arctic gameworlds are very different from those on the Moon or the regular areas on Earth. They are home to other, more scientific-oriented people with their own distinctive needs and buildings. You will also exploit and process different resources than on Earth or the Moon. To raise a space port and fly to the Moon you will first have to obtain certain goods from the Artic region. You can compare this gameplay mechanism to the Oriental spices from Anno 1404. In the Artic you will also meet a certain third party which dedicates itself on stabilizing the climate on Earth and will require your help.

Why not to make many varieties of buildings especially buildings of inhabitants, cause they seems to be blocks with same theme.

There are indeed some variations of every residential building. It is a complicated tradeoff to add diversity to them on one side and to keep up the consistency on the other side, so the city remains recognizable and distinguishable. Right now we are working on the perfection of these two goals, so the look of the cities as you see them on screenshots is really advanced but still not final. For example we are working on animated ads and holographic projections to be attached to the buildings to create additional diversity, modernity and liveliness.

We were told that instead of Monuments, there will be a system that is similar to the castle system in Anno 1701. Do you have any more information on that, which you are willing to share?

Players will be able to construct a Corporation HQ during the endgame. It consists out of different modules that can be combined to create really huge headquarter structures comparable to the castle systems in 1701 and 1404. We also paid attention to the fact that our ornamental sets like the city park or the parking lots are easy to combine with the corporation headquarter so players can show off and create spectacular screenshots and movies or enjoy their creation in the postcard view and the camera flights we prepared for them in every sector.

i was a little concerned about the per session complexity being slightly nerfed but looking at it it kinda makes sense, the map is the world and each session is an island so to speak.

The Art is nice but it's disappointing to see the DLC carv up is already in full swing before the game is even released.

Just to be clear, I have no issues with DLC per say, I just prefer it when it has been created after the shipping of a good game and making sure the post launch focus is there for inevitable bug fixing. It should add to the experience and be non intrusive to the existing experience and optional.

I'm going to compare this to the Witcher 3, which just released the 'hearts of stone DLC', which was a separate download if purchased. This is the first paid DLC and before I bought it, there were no 'locked out' quest markers in game to ruin my immersion, which was nice. I bought it because I wanted to experience more from a game I already had a great time in. Which is how DLC should be.

Sorry for the double post but questions

So, does anyone know if there is actually going to be files on the physical disk version of this game?

Reason I ask, is the Metal Gear 5 physical version just had a link to steam for a 50 gig download, bit of a surprise for anyone expecting it. I have also recently heard that fallout 4 is going to be the same. I'm hoping this wont start to be a common trend!

It will make a big difference as to me keeping my over priced pre-order from Amazon.

I know the 2070 collectors edition had a disk and installed from it, but back then it wasn't uPlay so might be different now?

TBH, the physical disk from the collectors edition of 2070 has caused me issues with installation since UPlay was updated a while back.

The disk has an old version of UPlay with a high version number, so when I go to play the game I get errors due to UPlay being old. Try to update UPlay and the higher version number means 'You already have the latest version'. The only hope I had was to attempt to find an obscure german update to UPlay which resolved the issue, or download from UPlay on my slow connection.

Of course this was what happened up to the last time I installed Anno, so things may have now changed from the latest update of UPlay.

Yeah I had a right pain in the backside the second to last time I reinstalled from disk too. I think now my copy of Anno has linked to my uPlay account, so the last time I think I just redownloaded it...I think. I may have just copy/pasted it over and let uPlay discover files which they've finally added and thankfully works wonderfully.

The nice thing about amazon pre orders is you can return them if unused, say if the game turns out to be poo from review on release day. The whole point is that if the disk is just a steam link anyway, I might as well just buy a key from kinguin or other for way less than half the cost of my current order.
Now my internet is so slow, physical media holds lots of relavence to me ha ha!

Yep, think I'm going to have to cave and pre-order using this from uPlay, I know I'm going to buy it eventually, and I'll want the DLC eventuallly too, just a fair chunk of money to go out, and there's a couple other games coming soon too (NFS, JC3, Star Wars Battlefront to name a few) all at around the same sort of price.

iirc the DE of 1404 was never released outside of germany.
