it's odd complimenting a bloke on his wood, but this definately deserves it! :D:hehe::thumb:

This is incredible. Cheaps is right, its already a standalone case dude. Good luck with that wood though lol. But the color of the wood really does go nicely with the alu.

    Thanks Stick. :)

Thanks John, but I'm working to reduce the weight. :thumb:

Yes, they seem to compliment each other well. :thumb:

    Thank you. :)

    Haha, thanks Fisher. :thumb:

Yes it's Jarrah, a native West Australian species. :thumb:

    Thanks b4, but I haven't started carving/shaping yet. :thumb:

There's no getting around it, it's going to be heavy but I'm trying to reduce the weight as
    much as I can. :)

Haha, I think that's OK just so long as you don't compliment me on the "hard wood". :hehe:

    Thank you. :)

    Thanks Wolvenstine. :thumb:

Had a couple of spare hours today so I decided to make a mess. :hehe:

Before I continue on the exterior some things need to be done while the outside
    is still flat.

This area needs to be removed to make room for the hinges.

And as much wood as I can get away with needs to be removed from the inside to
    reduce weight.

I figured about 12mm deep for these "cells" gives me 10mm thickness at the closest
point when the outside is shaped. Some ribs will be left for strength.

If you think this is messy, you should see me. :hehe:

Then the recess for the hinges is cut.

This is just a piece of scrap to give you an idea of how the hinges will work.

I still have some time so I'm off to sharpen my chisels so all this can be cleaned up. It
will probably take three times longer than the original cuts.

I hope you plan to add some kind of teflon washers to your hinges. Alu on alu grinds down really quick. I just replaced a shower door that tried to make it's way to China.
That stuff should fertilize the yard well.:D

By seeing all the beautiful work you have done with that chunk of wood that sentence becomes funny.

Man I've been looking at those pics for 30 mins now and can't stop looking.

Awesome. Can't wait to see how the outside looks after you shave it down. :) You going to do a separate hinge for the top and bottom, or one long piece in between the case hinge points?

    Haha, thanks null. :hehe:

Yes, these were the parts that took two months to deliver. The bushes aren't teflon but
some other kind of hard wearing industrial plastic, the name escapes me at the moment.
With the stainless pins the top part of each hinge will be resting on the flange of the bush,
the thought of a pile of alu on the desk every time the shell is opened wasn't something I
    liked too much. :D
Oh, those pins are 4mm in diameter.

    Thank you Jozo. :)

Thanks. :thumb: I did want to make each side from one piece but I couldn't work out
how to drill the hole for the pin in the projection for the top part. As the pins are an
interference fit I could have drilled from the outside, but this would leave a visible hole
at the top. This rough paint diagram may explain better.

The black looks like Delrin or one of the harder plastics. 4 months? What! Your address directions are "Once you leave the highway"? [IMG]

Oh and @Fisher - Denver is expecting another blizzard Saturday, 12 to 18" snow plus strong wings and whiteout conditions. 2 in 9 days. I remember green, we used to have that color in Denver.

Like most places these days, they don't get it till they sell it, and if they can't get it after
    you've payed for it, tough.

Haha, no, not on this one.

    :hehe::thumb:

I don't have a Dremel. But I think that I may have to drill from the outside. :thumb:

    Thank you. :)

    Thanks b4oz. :thumb:

:hehe: Well probably too much detail but, It was 34C here that day and I just had shorts
on, no shoes or shirt. Red man. :hehe:

Just cleaning up on the inside.

All the cuts that were made last time are cleaned up and squared with a chisel.

Then the flats of the cut outs need to be smoothed and the router burns removed.

    I started with sand paper........

But this was going to take too long, so I decided to use a chisel as a scraper. This was
quicker and the finish, while not final, was terrific.

This really brings the grain up.

    Nearly done.

Next time I start on the outside, this will either make it or break it. :worried:
