Perhaps this, coming from respected members of the Republican party, will lead to a movement to put another candidate in Trump's place but I wouldn't bet on it. Anything that might help to ensure he doesn't get a second term is good though.
There are a lot of republicans that refused to vote for Trump. The shame is on those who never liked him but who fell in just because they saw he had a base of support.
Good podcast from The Economist on this topic: https://pca.st/episode/a770acbb-7d31-42bd-a757-16603f5b980a A couple of interviews in there really worth listening to.
Just order your very own RoboCop via Uber when you need one Jokes aside, the whole "abolish the police in Minneapolis" thing sounds like an aspirational goal along the lines of "we'll do it maybe in 2045 after lots of preparatory work that has yet to be defined" rather than anytime soon.
In the short term it probably means that the State Troopers will take over general law enforcement instead of Minneapolis PD. In the longer term I would expect it to mean a new Minneapolis PD being hired from scratch with policies, training and staff not connected to the old PD. If the PD gets disbanded they can make everyone from the commisioner down redundant without going through the hassle of removing them from office. I'm sure some people have 'no cops on the streets anymore' in their mind but that's not happening. There's also a precedent for this. New Jersey disbanded it's Camden PD around 2013-14 and fired the entire force. A lot of them got re-hired into other forces, but the NJ officials clearly had a **** list of staff they wanted gone.
So, the city council is basically stating that the whole police dept is rotten to the core and beyond saving? Wow.
Someone did a bit of a round up regarding issues with the MPD (mostly focusing on the 3rd Precinct for obvious reasons): https://www.startribune.com/third-precinct-served-as-playground-for-renegade-cops/571076562/
I hope they plan to rebuild the PD from the ground up because Minneapolis will be like the Wild West without law enforcement.
I wish people would stop describing Trump as a Billionaire Businessman when he's a millionaire property developer. Property development is about taking risks with other people's money and avoiding being around when it inevitably goes wrong.
Word. Although being a billionaire businessman wouldn't necessarily be a huge endorsement of his character either. No shade to billionaires, plenty are ethical, but plenty are hella unethical too. It's just so irrelevant to suitability to office. That's one thing I can't get into the Trump supporter mindset on: they think his money makes him good for the job. If anything it makes me think he's less suitable for it. I had the same misgivings about Hilary, she was up to her neck in big business associations and I just thought: "both of these candidates look horribly compromised". Maybe if he was an entrepeneur who'd founded businesses and employed thousands, and those businesses had a reputation for ethical employer conduct and good workplace ratings. Like if Bill Gates ran for it, I wouldn't say his business past would work against him being a good leader. Because he's actually shown moral fibre and a sense of social duty. In fact either of the Gates would be a fairly good prospect.
By all evidence he's not even a Millionaire. He's still coasting on tax deductions from one of his previous bankruptcies, has a string of property failures behind him after that (and questions remain surrounding the various foreign investors still bankrolling a multi-bankrupt property developer with more failed schemes than successful ones), and spends as much time as possible at his own properties to milk the taxpayer for accommodation fees. I can hope, but confidence is low. It would require everyone who previously voted for Trump in face of overwhelming evidence to decide to eat crow, which seems unlikely.
But he done good! He's 'Making Merica GREAT Again!'. He's done tell all those Chineseses to respect the United States of USA and not to try to take advantage of all those hardworking Mericans, who also need guns in case they invade and take away the freedom to choose to work for fine Merican institutions. like Starbucks and Wallmart! And he built a wall, all by himself, to keep those dirty Mehicans out! Also he got rid of Obamacare, which is good, because he was the wrong color to start with, and also why should Mericans pay for someone else's medical bill? Also, you know he's straight, because he paid a porn star to do things to him - you wouldn't want a gay president, would you? That would be as bad as being foreign!
Didn't Trump go through the 80s & 90s on the back of loans from banks and investors that were into him for so much money they couldn't take the chance on denying him further investment - kinda their own personal "too big to fail" thing?
If you want proof that Trump is a woeful businessman, he is the guy who went bankrupt running a casino.
