wow looking good but what are those little holes for.. i mean to me it looks like you were gonna run the cables through them.. but now with sleeving etc that's impossible..
can I ask how you replaced the wires on the PSU? Did you re-solder all the connections inside? If so, do you have any pics of that? I've always been daunted by re-soldering inside the PSU and would love to see some finished work of people that have done it so I can get the courage up to try it myself. Also, what's the 18AWG for? I know the 24AWG is for the PSU (like the 24 pin connector), but the 18? Fans?
Thanks Ben! You are correct they are for the cables. With a tiny amount of pressure you can still push the cables through the holes with the heatshrink on. It is a perfect fit! However you cannot remove them again, so I'm not putting the aluminium piece on the cable until it is powdercoated. I haven't got any pics unfortunately. Basically, I just cut the wires inside the PSU and then soldered new ones on the end, heatshrinking the join. I couldn't be bothered to unsolder them from the inside. You have it the wrong way round - the lower the AWG, the larger the wire core. So 18AWG is for molex stuff like the 24pin and 24 is for fans
Fantastic job matey really love these risks in modding lol Mod on mate I just want to see more and more!
Do you have any pictures of the old and new cables being soldered together? - Or how you did it? Thanks.
Thanks AnG3L! Thanks! Thankyou! No pics of that sorry. This is what i did: - open up PSU - cut off all the cables i dont want (non-modular 8pin cpu, non-modular gpu cables etc) - get a new 24pin connector. - prepare 24 new cables to the length you need. strip both ends and crimp one end - remove a pin from the old 24 pin connector. - cut it off inside the PSU - strip the end of the wire inside the psu - solder the new wire onto the end of the wire from the PSU. - heatshrink over the solder joint - plug into the new connector in the same position as before. - rinse and repeat 23 more times!
I must say; the amount of work you put into this to make every detail perfect is amazing! It looks really, really good, even your hardware has been chosen with design in mind. I like it One little ting though - I actually liked the 24 pin cable better with just the black wires. It looked more simple. Not that you sleeving isn't good, it couldn't really be any better, but I just liked the look with the bare cables a bit better Keep up the good work!
Thanks very much You have a point about the cables. I am still unsure on this myself, and i will just have to see what happens. I may end up going back to bare cables, I just don't know Uhm, how?! Agreed lol!
Update #23 - 06/08/2010 I have been rather busy for the past week with my entry for the eBuyer case competition: The case used to be an £11 Casecom beige steel mid-tower that i have transformed into something rather more attractive! Now that it is done I can get back to my main project After getting a 3850 for my tech bench I mounted the waterblocks on the 5850s that used to be on the bench. I will be powdercoating the nickel backplates gloss white - as much as I like the nickel i feel it detracts too much from my theme. Since i am no longer having motherboard blocks, I can now go parallel on my graphics cards. Tubing will be shorter than this, i just had these bit as offcuts so thought why not! I am in the process of sourcing black o-rings to replace those green ones. At the moment i am using threaded extenders to lift the straight compressions high enough to clear the PCB, however i may try and get some normal spacers instead - i am unsure of the look at the moment of the bottom graphics card fittings. As i said earlier, the tubing will be shorter than i previously showed. You can see that in this pic. I think having the backplates white will balance out the motherboard area a bit more - at the moment it is dominated too much by black. And here you can see how the quad rad from down below will connect up to the lower graphics card. QUESTION! White connector, as shown, or black one? I am leaning towards getting a black one.
Just saw all these photos over on Overclock.net... Still picking my jaw up off the floor... Truly incredible man!
