Maverick, followed by Fury road then Aliens On a note I've had to swap the receiver out, the 3800h I was looking at doesn't have the grunt to run the whole setup as I forgot to take my changing of the front mains to the bigger 500s into account, instead I've managed to wrangle a 6700h for just shy of 1200, pick it up Tuesday
Caveat first - I'm not trying to dissuade you of a bigger AVR and I would never do such a thing... More power is always more better. Always. But also - bear in mind that AVR's onboard amplification will always be limited by a shared power supply. It is true that the 6700 has a slightly larger power supply, and larger individual amplifier boards as well, resulting in more overall power, and more dynamic power to channels which demand it (the LCR). But also, you have the option of putting the pre-outs to work as well - with a separate 2ch power amplifier for your fronts - thus giving them their own bucket of power, and taking them out of the bucket on the AVR for the rest of your speakers. This will always result in more system headroom than going for a larger AVR (aside possibly from some edge cases at the extreme high end).
IDK if you are into Fallout but at least watch the episode where the bombs fall. OMFG I thought the flat roof was going to blow off and fly away tornado stylee
It was an unwritten law at Rogers to have at least twice the amplifier power as your RMS rating on the speakers. This makes sure you don’t run into clipping and thus don’t blow any drivers.
Tbh i was thinking this but that a plan for later on down the road when i have actual money to spend.
Many (most?) speaker manufacturers these days seem to state a "recommended amplifier power" window instead of a maximum power handling figure. I guess for the uninitiated it would be easy to assume that if my "maximum power handling" was 100w, I should ensure my chosen amplifier has less than that. That said, ratings are both amps and speakers are sort of the wild west too, so IMO the best rule of thumb is "if it sounds like garbage, maybe turn it down a bit"
The reason why they lived by that unwritten law is just that everything is happy. Like, the amp doesn't have to work too hard, and the speakers will not get clipping or distortion which is the biggest killer of components. Mainly the tweeters. They hate it.
Agree - I think for the lay-person though, "too much power will blow my speaker" makes more sense... and probably that the guy in the hifi shop is trying to tell me that's wrong, and that too little power is the greater evil, is trying to sell something I don't need (which they certainly are, its just not that)
I think my Panasonic Blu-ray player disc drive has given up the ghost. It's pretty old so no great loss . Can anyone recommend a reasonable blu ray player as a replacement? More than happy to go 2nd hand and don't really want the temptation of a console. Nothing in my AV setup is UHD but if a UHD player would play fine at 1080p then a bit of future proofing wouldn't hurt.
i would wait till primeday sale hits as they tend drop prices a bit https://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-...mzn1.fos.d7e5a2de-8759-4da3-993c-d11b6e3d217f
Are there any models that are circa 5+ years old that might be available cheap on eBay that are worth considering? I'm not particularly looking for additional features but more the ability to play my small selection of Blu-rays.
I got a Panasonic DMP-BDT170 3D Smart Blu-Ray Disc Player seven years ago for £40. Mainly because we've got a bunch of 3D discs. Certainly does the trick, but we've also got some Sony BDP-S360/370s scattered about as well that are good, if dated. Tends to be you lose on the connectivity functionality with the older ones (eg. Amazon Prime isn't updated as an app although it was groundbreaking to have it at the time for us). If you just want to play your discs, either of those should be fine though.
I bought this Panasonic for the office. Works fine, although I admit I've not used any of the "smart" features beyond plugging a USB stick in (it works, but it's a limited number of formats supported). £75 brand-spanking-new, which is about as cheap as you'll find. There's a buy-it-now on eBay for £38-ish posted.
well, good news and bad news, the good news is I picked up the receiver last week and after finishing off the connection plate and stopping up until ****-am™ making audio cables; it works. finished off the last of the lighting and installed some more sockets under where the audio rack will eventually go (probably a 15/20u rack, not decided yet) the bad news is I'm short on parts to finish off the HTPC and lacking funds until payday, tis ok I thought; I'll lump the big-rig downstairs for the time being and have access to all my library and a nice meaty gpu for some tidy 4k gaming. 4090 is dead, ****! I've stuffed my old 2080TIfe for the time being so I'm back online and I've RMA sorted, am currently fighting with fed-ex's god awful website to arrange a pickup but this is a headache I could do without. fs I hate streaming and just want DV/Atmos already
One of the first "real" reviews I've seen for the troupe of emerging smart HT remotes - https://www.avforums.com/reviews/sofabaton-x1s-universal-remote-review.21898/ Seems pretty good - almost a carbon copy of Harmony, which is what I'm sure what they were going for. It was always quite difficult to judge if some of these new universal remotes as many of them seemed to have a religion-like following... early adopters saying how fantastic they were whilst also making excuses for flat-out not working half the time because they were still effectively in development. £186 on Amazon (perhaps even less in the upcoming Prime Day sales... only because Harmony always seemed to be discounted quite a bit in such things). Fills a good spot in the market IMO, and I hope they do well.
I got hold of a Harmony (Extreme? One?) a few years ago in an Amazon sale. Correct me if I'm wrong or things have changed, mine would only work if everything was switched on all the time in standby, sucking at the wall. Since we pretty much turn everything off when not in use, it was cheaper to just suffer the various remotes since you'd only be using a couple at a time. Are these new ones any different?
