    Scanner get!

The lower ADF scanning element glass is buggered!

    scannershattered.jpg

The thing's filthy, too, and had a dirty copy of someone else's document in the flatbed. No way this has been reconditioned, or even powered up - it was cocooned in bubblewrap and the much larger flatbed glass is fine, so (X) Doubt on it happening in transit.

Fingers crossed for a smooth return process, and I'll have to remember to put that seller on my no-go list. Sadface.

    EDIT:
Was wrapping it back up again, and found this. The power cable's chuffin' MELTED.

Christ, good thing you didn’t plug that mess in…

Wasn’t it an eBay thing? Hopefully you’ll have some recourse with eBay itself if the seller messes you about.

Yeah, business seller on eBay, 98.4% positive feedback, loads of scanners up for sale. He offered a replacement (again, if I post it back) but I declined - if he's sending stuff out in that condition, I don't want another one!

He's gone very quiet now I've asked him to arrange collection...

But I've eBay's Buyer Protection or Purchase Protection or whatever the hell it's called now to fall back on, and I can ask for a chargeback if that fails as I paid on a credit card and it's over a hunnert quid.

    EDIT:
Return accepted, and he's provided a pre-paid Royal Mail label via eBay's return process - which means I can book collection for tomorrow for free, and not have to try to lug the whackin' gert parcel to the Post Office.

Okay, let's try that again, shall we?

    upload_2025-3-14_22-59-3.png

Fujitsu Fi-7160 - a generation up, but a generation behind current. Supposedly has even better feeding and anti-skew and all the rest of it, is even faster at 120 images per minute(!), has a USB 3.0 connection, and comes properly refurbished, new rollers fitted, and 12-month RTB warranty from a seller with 100% positive feedback. Oh, and the brochure specifically says it works with Ubuntu, so that's nice.

Two downsides: it doesn't have a flatbed (that's the Fi-7260, which is one of these stuck on top of a flatbed body and more expensive from less-well-reviewed sellers), so I'll have to keep the SP-1425 around for that; and it was £225. Now, that's pretty cheap compared to what it would have cost new - but still more than I really wanted to pay.

Let's hope this one doesn't end in disappointment!

    EDIT:
Oh, and it's officially rated to a 9,000-sheet - not page, sheet - daily workload(!) Should be able to handle a few 700-page magazines nae bother!

Fancy pants bourbon glasses, super heavy bases that keep the drink cool without ice adulterating the drink

A4 guillotine - reckons it'll do a stack of paper up to 4cm thick, which is more than I need for cutting the spines off magazines. I'm suspicious, but it's worth a go - would save me a hell of a lot of time...

Thought I'd try some AR glasses to breakaway from that uncomfortable head down, sore neck position when gaming on the handhelds etc. so picked up a set of Viture Pro glasses, a little concerned about how they'd work as I am needing glasses for small screens these days, these have in built myopic adjuster to help with that, works well though one eye is obviously just over its limit but its pretty clear. If my eyes deteriorate further it maybe a problem but for now great.

Screen clarity is great, good brightness, at absolute extremities in the corners its not that sharp, is that my eyes or the optics, dunno, but its fine for my gaming and media uses, was even good for browsing, being 1080p I was concerned it might be blocky emulating a 135" screen but it's good ( I'd say it's not quite as large as suggested more lik 100") using FSR etc on the handheld PC it looks good, of course on an APU, even the 890M using framegen, struggles to hit 120hz, so for this that is more of a marketing thing in my use case at least.

Having played a bit with VR when gaming I find my self wanting to look around the landscape in Wukong or monster hunter with these on and of course screen just follows my head :D

Watched the F1 qualy on it, it was great, sure a proper big 4k screen running it in UHD is better but when you don't have access to the telly, this was pretty good, the built in sound from the arms is loud enough to drown out MAFs or whatever bollox the family were wasting the TV screen on, though I was told they could hear a DIN, I did have it cranked to the max. Electrochromatic blackout of glasses for the background is very good.

They all of course told me I look like a twit, but they soon shut up when I offered to take over the TV instead.

Seems like it's going to be a useful travel addition beyond my home uses.

Software seemed like it might be good for multi screening or emulating a 3080x1080 screen but I have not tried that in anger but it tracked my head well. On my handheld PC it has undesirable effects as they don't use normal screens they are flipped landscape screens and so it went upside down, as it's not a usecase I would really use l did not explore display manager to see if I could correct it but if you are looking into these and that might be a case for you I'll look further.

Does it clamp down on the workpiece before it cuts?

It does! That's what the crank on the right is for: you insert your paper, spin that to clamp it along its full length (allegedly), then release the safety and pull the big handle down.

Reviews of similar Chinese OEM stuff suggest they work pretty well, with a few caveats: it can leave the last few pages uncut (which you fix by either padding with scrap paper or manually cutting those afterwards) and they sometimes arrive with a bit or two missing. I've had Vevor stuff in the past, though: it's cheap, but it's always functional.

Quite a few bits & pieces lately...

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (Kindle edition) - throroughly enjoyable book, would recommend if you're a fan of The Martian (which I am, a big fan).

All the magnets! 10x3mm and 6x2mm - 10x3's are for some cable management loops I printed, and the 6x2's are for Gridfinity stuff

    Elegoo PETG filament

Silica gel, with which to make filament dryer boxes

Waveshare 1.28" round display with RP2350 board (link) - I'm making a dedicated hardware Pomodoro timer so that I don't need to use apps on my watch or phone, which carry the ability to get me distracted very quickly

And... a whole bunch of miniature gubbins...

WH40K starter set of Blueberry Boys and a few handfuls of paint

Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game minis, 'Warriors of Minas Tirith'

Some tools from a local store (Firestorm Games) - flush cutters, files, and a stabby boi

    Some better flush cutters...

Few more brushes, 'cos one ain't enough!

    Mould line scraper

Tamiya extra thin cement, 'cos that Citadel stuff is rubbish

    Wet palette

And another set of Citadel paints

Was a bit pissed with the quality of the MESBG minis, but I'll talk about that in the Warhammer thread, I've waffled on here for long enough

I picked up the Viture One from CeX a few weeks back. I didn't want to spend the extra on the Pro version in case I really didn't get on with them, but I was pleasantly surprised with just how well they work. I haven't used them all that much as an external display because I find it hard to read text that close without corrective lenses. My myopia prescription isn't that strong really, but the astigmatism is fairly pronounced in one eye. For moving images, like watching films or playing games, they're great - but for 'doing actual real work' stuff they're a nightmare to read text.

So I'm trying contacts lenses again to see how I get on...
