Note, the following rant does not apply to countries like america where everything is far apart...

Make them walk, I'm talking about kids, I'm sick of the amount of traffic it causes when parents think they are doing something good by driving their kids to school and I'm sick of the Bus not stopping because its allready full of kids.

Seriously, most of the traffic in the morning is caused by cars with one adult and one kid inside (and the road capacity being reduced due to on street parking but thats another story), I mean why do parents drive their kids to school? Theres a school around every corner, so distance cant be it, security? no way thats the reason even if parents will claim it is, why? because if they would really be worried about security they woudnt leave their kids out in the evening to have fun getting drunk and triggering alarms on cars (dont ask, it seems to be the current hype with kids in the area i live)...
If parents would atleast be intelligent enough to fill the car with kids... but no, one car per kid to make matters worse.
So, pls, just make that lazy buch walk, a) its good for their health, b) the lowered amount of traffic would help the general public c) the parents would have more time for whatever.

Epic agree. It'll do the kids good and, if people are worried about the security of kids then all those bus drivers can be retrained as bodyguards.

I agree as well. There are places here in the States where walking is impractical (I lived 5ish miles from my high school), but there are places where it definitely is (IE: Pullman, where the whole town is two miles across). I didn't walk to my high school, I bicycled as often as I could.

I used to really enjoy walking to school. 3-4 of us used to walk to school (unless it was raining really heavily) and then 2 walked home, although sometime my mum wouldn't let me for some unknown reason.

It was nice to be able to talk on the way there and I am sure it helped wake me up.

Come to think of it, we must have looked like idiots in our uniforms.

Why don't you just walk, OP? Kids have as much right to get on buses and go places by car as you do.

5 miles is a chore to walk, but possible on bike easily. When I walk to and from work I walk a total of about 5 miles a day.

Its actually what i do, a car would be expensive (I rather spend that money on renting a nice place than a bad one) and the traffic is horrible, the bus doesnt show up intime and then doesnt stop because its full... so yes I walk unless there are school holidays and almost no traffic and empty busses.

So basicly the kids should walk because you don't want to?

That seems pretty damn selfish to me.

Agreed, they have as much of a right to use buses and be taken in cars as you do. It's also overlooking all the millions of commuters who drive themselves to work with no-one else in the car, the roads are clogged up as much by adult commuters as they are by kids getting a lift.

I walk most places (or our new trend is microscooters ... who said you have to act your age at seventeen) but walking to school involves main roads, or fields, or something that is just impractical when I can get a lift with the neighbors who work there and have someone at school there. I always walk into my town, always walk to close mates houses but now I've moved to a school in another county it isn't easy as my mates live there and not here.
At the weekend a load of us dug out our microscooters from 10 years ago to scoot to and from a party. 5 miles isn't far but scooting takes it out of you. Nothing beats exercise like that at 2am

I agree that no one walks anywhere anymore; but agree with the comment Spec made.

So children become INSTANTLY lazy because they don't walk to school, that's one of the most stupid thing I've heard.

My brother gets driven to school everyday, he is 9, and we live 15 minutes walk away from the school, the reason? We all like to get up, have a shower, be fully awake, get a decent breaky, but also get a good long sleep, I think everyone would rather have a longer sleep, and be more relaxed, than a shorter sleep, and be rushed because you might be late, and then get a bollocking by the idiot teachers because he is 30 seconds late. It's well known that 8.00am+/3.00pm are full of traffic because it's mainly people getting to work and kids getting dropped off to school.

If you want no traffic, get up earlier yourself and leave earlier to avoid it all, but don't blame it on everyone else and call them lazy. I got dropped off to college also, but I also jogged 15miles+ per week, am I still lazy?

I bike in the summer to my classes, I walked to school in elementary, middle school was far away. high school i biked/walked. I have to totally agree with this. What also pisses me off, parents DRIVING their kids around on Halloween. WALK FFS! I sometimes want to slam the door on them when they say Trick or treat.

No, his point is that for the kids who can walk to school, they bloody well should, which would free up the roads for real journies - whether those jouries are the kids who genuinely do need cars to get to school, or adults who do also genuinely need a car for whatever journey they're doing.

    :)

You are part of the problem. Go to bed earlier, or even better - get fitter (walk to school) and you'll need less sleep in general, and then your brother can walk to school AND not be late. Not walking a 15 minute walk is frankly disgusting.

I walked a mile and a quarter to and from school by myself just fine from years 3 to 6. Secondary school I got the schoolbus - it's only about 8 miles thought and I would cycle most days duting summer. I could get there before the bus due to shortcuts through fields and stuff (bridleways and stuff guys, not just random fields).

I have to get the bus to college, but I still end up walking about a mile each way.

I honestly don't mind walking at all. I've walked home from parties at 3am for like 6 miles, but I've found skateboarding is easier when mostly in urban areas. Many people I know, however, refuse to walk more than 15 minutes or so. It's ridiculous. People should be encouraged to walk from a young age, even if it's just to get them used to it and increase fitness levels.
