I was up Arthurs seat but it was blowing a gale and my tripod kept rocking. I'm glad it wasn't just me that had trouble with longer than 2-3 second exposures.

A common trick to help stabilise a tripod is to hang your camera bag / carrier bag full of bricks (whichever is heavier) from the bottom of your tripods centre column.

:thumb: This technique gets the Pookey seal of approval.

    Weight is your friend sometimes.

People get spiky when I suggest the support needs to have some weight to it to stop it vibrating and ruining the shot. Then I gently remind them that their $3938472 tripod is still a good purchase, just hang a heavy lens (or the entire bag) from the hook and you're golden :thumb:

Also.. if you're going to all the trouble of setting up a tripod... use mirror lock up if your camera has it.

I was on the bike so travelling as light as possible so nothing heavier than the tripod to hang from it. I have been thinking about a way of rigging the bike up as a mono/tripod but that wouldn't have helped where I was.

I don't have mirror lock up on the D3100 but quiet mode makes a visible difference to the shake at the expense of slowing down the shutter response time, not an issue for most shots but a pain for fireworks.

As I mentioned earlier, take an empty carrier bag with you & fill it with stones when you set up. :thumb:
