    Hello,

I have a choice of 1 of 2 processors to get: Xeon W3690 or i7 990X to run in my rig in my sig.

    So which one and why?

    Cheers,

    Simon.

My question to you is what do you want all the processing power for. If it's just for the hell of it then the better choice would be the 980X.

Money burning a hole in my pocket. So why would you choose the Extreme over the Xeon?

I would because, it's a straight drop in no brainier, you won't have to think about RAM comparability or anything. Plus better gaming performance, the Xenon is more of a work horse chip.

Ok I forgot about the ram may not be compatible with the Xeon. I guess you have answered my question.

    Cheers,

    Simon.

I'm with bulldogjeff on the 990 - no worries about things not working.

How cheap are you getting one anyway? Are you sure you don't want to hold out for LGA2011?

Nah, it will be at least the end of Q3 before we see any socket 2011 and then we may not see the 8 core, 16 threaded cpus.

It will be nice to go home Wednesday night to a 990x awaiting me. I'm just going to purchase it from Scan as we get free delivery.

    Cheers,

    Simon.

Would an overclocked 970 be any good? 6 cores still and saving £300+?

No, I like the fact of having a unlocked multiplier. More fun when wanting to achieve higher clocks with a lower bus speed.

    Simon.

I'd spend the money on a monitor.

I'd get the 990x if you have money burning a hole in your pocket then its the only answer until lga 2011 comes along, as 990x are basically cherry picked 980x, it would be much better to get a 990 if you have the money rather than save a little bit and get a 980 or anything like that, and enjoy it mate :D I'll be jealous if you do get it

Surely there's something, anything else out there to shell the excess money on? Buying a 1366 CPU is just so silly when you already have one at 4,4 GHz.

But if it's really what you want, just go for the 990..

I'm wondering how you use a 63" telly as a monitor. Windows desktop looks bad enough on a 32" 1080p set.... Plus do you have to sit miles from it or do you sort of move your head like Stevie Wonder ? Not being funny..these are serious questions.

Must be awesome for films though !

990x is the last hurar! of the x58 system, and overclocks alot better than the 980x, and it just better all round, theres a good overlock3d review on it.

If it was my money, i would get a Dell Ultrasharp U3011 30", and melt my face with the uber rez

Buy me a SSD instead, the C300's are 1/5 of the price and you'll make me a very very happy bot. I'll make you a robot when I finish my degree... :p

I agree with Otis, those three GTX580s will do some work at that monster res.

I mean.. Diminishing returns, man. You'll probably be disappointed with the performance gains vs. your 4.4Ghz quad core i7.

From what i remember true did have a 30" and 2x 24" monitors, but then upgraded them also. I dont think the 63" TV is used as a monitor, or at least not the main one.

    That's right I did have a 3008wfp and 2x 20" p2010h monitors in portrait either side of my 30".

I am using my TV at the moment as a monitor. But being sat on the sofa 4metres away isn't that bad when using it for surfing etc.

I have pic's in my sig of me playing Crysis Warhead on the 63" TV (My TV setup).

When I had the 3 u2410 I noticed that some games were being stretched and looked very pixelated. This gave me the idea of buying another 3 U2410 (6 in total) so that the FOV was not so stretched. Running 6 monitors would need some serious horse power to run any games. But then thinking about it, the bezels would be in at eye line. (Not good!!) I decided to sell my 3 U2410 and use my TV as 6 U2410 would be the same size as my 63" TV until I think of something else....

What I really want is the 60" TV 3840x2160in the clip below the one where they had Farcry 2 running off of 2 Asus Mars GTX 295.

    Cheers,

    Simon.

Could you not use 3x30" monitors all in portrait mode for Crysis, thus taking about the problem of having the bezels in the middle but still have a huge screen area? Or am I being noobish and that this just isn't possible?
