Damn looks cool. Personally I like the raw alu look better myself (especially for the feet) but it looks damn fine all the same.

How do you feel about making 2 shells, one your original vision and one with the AC Ryan prize pack acrylic you won for MoTM?? I'd love to see that, I think you're pretty tooled up for it as well! I wonder if the metal brake you made would work with plexi bending?. I've been spaced out, imagining a jig to hold big sheets of plexi as I heat and bend them for the last few minutes... A smooth rounded corner around the edges forming a front and back total window, maybe a ring of plexi like a washer above the feet pads... and that you could swap out or I think it would be fantastic, but it's your vision!.
Pull those images out of your head, and lets see the next steps. Again, This is indeed a jaw dropping prime example of a scratch build. Congratulations!

 

I think this is the right time to make another post in this topic, I haven't posted for a while I think. The anodized assembly simply looks awesome. I recognize the feeling "is this everything I made?", but the case looks great. So different then anything else we've seen in a while, it's just a completely new approach to building a case

As for the shell, yes unfortunately I have many Ideas for this and this makes it
difficult to settle on one thing. One of those ideas involves a transparent case
with alloy frame visible as well. But that's just one idea.

Ok, wild thought on the alternative case vision, spurred by cc3d's lyrics quotes. I had no idea what cygnus x-1 was (thought it was a song!) so I looked it up on wikipedia.

... So... that made me thing of Xrays, and black holes... and 1way mirrored acrylic! What about the shell made of that, with lighting you can turn on to illuminate the case inside? Maybe a "black hole" (aka circle of black plexi)

Again, just an idea, take it or leave it!

Yes I'd never heard of the song till someone pointed it out here. I read an article in
Scientific American many years ago about black holes and Cygnus X1 was mentioned
as the first "likely" discovered black hole. Though there is some evidence for such things
and strong theoretical foundations for believing they exist, no one really knows if they are
"out there". My avatar at the moment is part of a Hubble image of Cygnus X1 (though I
think you can guess it's heavily "enhanced". ).
Anyway what I mean to say is that although I've long forgotten the details of that article
the name Cygnus X1 has never left me, and a floor lamp that I made about ten years ago
also has that name.
Yes the mirrored acrylic is a great idea, I'll be getting some cardboard today to try and get
some ideas into the real world and when I arrive at something that MAY be a goer, I'll show you.
Edit:
Oh and I just remembered, the Walt Disney movie "The black hole" featured a derelict space craft called the USS
Cygnus, no doubt named after the Constellation where the X-ray source X-1 is located.
I saw this movie many years ago but only remember a few details including the nasty (but cool) robot Maximillian.

Thanks Oreon, The fitting of expansion cards is pretty straight forward, you will see this
later.

 

I went out and bought a couple of sheets of 3mm MDF. Apart from this being a good
approximation of the sheet and angle I will be using, it was very cheap, fifteen bucks
for two large sheets.



What follows is an attempt to get an overall look at some of the ideas I have.


SOME CONSIDERATIONS.

This is just a trial.
It is not functional.
I Am just trying to get an overall look.
Nothing here may ever be used.
I'm trying to work as fast as possible so parts are just being ripped with the jigsaw
and the frayed edges sanded down, no other attempt at accuracy is being done.
The final product will be made in aluminium and perhaps plex (maybe not).
Attention to how many parts need to made.
Attention to the structural integrity of the assemblies.
Though I don't have a time limit, I don't want to spend the rest of my life making
this, so this also needs to be considered.

Starting off with the half frames that will be hinged to the backplate.







It would be nice to have some gentle curves.





I'm using a hot melt glue gun to join the pieces together quickly.



The lower part of the case will be wider than the top part. And the front not as wide as
the back.







And I've been thinking about auto grilles (?) for the lower part.















Hmmm, I don't know about that grille. The sides are OK and top may need a gentle curve.
What do you think so far?
