dutchcedar, are you using SketchUp or SketchUp Pro for your drawings? Those are great 3d models.

Yeah, I am, and thanks. Its the perfect program for this kinda thing, because its quick, accurate and makes decent enough presentations. I think it was SketchUp 2 or 3 when this all got started, now its version 5. :cooldude:

^^^ I haven't tried six yet... is it better?

    Monitor Stand Design...

I've been tryin' to come up with a clever way to support three 30" monitors and think I've finally got it... a one off fiberglass over wood surfboard that's about six feet long, eighteen inches wide, two inches thick and is held off the desk with four 3/4" thick machined and polished aluminum skags. The monitors can attach to the board with machined aluminum supports.

I put the keyboard in this model so you can get a sense of the scale... :hip:

    beats my two 30"s

one suggestion for you is to make each have an independent height adjustment with an independent swivel on each.

that way they are easily switched to the best orientation for the task at hand. I use two separate swing-arms for mine and it makes using them to full effect so much easier.

Ya know, I'll probably make them adjustable, but I presently run three 21" screens and to be honest, I haven't moved them except to fiddle with cables and such. If anything, the supports that come with monitors these days seem kinda flimsy.

Your suggestion's certainly a valid one... especially on the swivel thing for the side monitors. :hip:

I never woulda thunk of that. But now it seems obvious! That's the mark of a great idea. Just awesome.

That's one crazy design, looking forward on how you're going to realize the design. I know it'll be awesome.

Are those 3 21" monitors that you're using now CRTs or LCDs? That's one heavy set if they are CRT monitors :hehe:

You've got the design, now you'll have to make it happen...

I suggested the height adjustment so that the side monitors would have enough corner-clearance if you were using a flat swivel. (two rectangular objects right next to each other just lock)

If you go for a 2-axis (side-side, landscape-portrait) type then the height adjustment is unnecessary.

I started with three IBM 21 inch CRT's about five years ago (270 pounds, all together :eyebrow: ), but for the last couple of years, they've been these Samsung 213T's...

To me the stands under the surfboard make it look a little too much like a skateboard. If, however, you sculpted something (out of clear acrylic or resin) that would give the illusion of water holding up the surfboard then it would be :jawdrop:

(for those that like lights you could even light the "water")

Sorry, for the double post. Firstly I had forgot to add that this has been an Awesome project to follow  . Secondly, another idea that might work for the surfboard would be to make the feet like a luggage rack on top of a vehicle (as if the board was strapped to that).

Real boards have a sheg or on some boards there is a tri-fin. You could incorporate that into the back of the board as support for one end.

I like the luggage rack idea, also. That would be very cool.
