Hello all. Since im new here, let me introduce my self: Im 29 years old, graphic designer, self imployed, from Croatia.

I was just stuned by quality and number of mods here on this forum. I was browsing 4 about month, trying to get some image of what can be done, learning about tools and tehniques.
Then i stumbled onto Cyprio's G5 case mod wich realy inspired me. THX MAN!! Great mod. I always worshiped apple design.
So my idea was to try to build G5 case that will look as Cyprios - loved his colour scheme, and in the proces, try to learn as much as i can bout tools and different materials.

    ok so here we go:

Material used is 1.5 mm aluminum sheats. As u can see they are rather old and damaged. I was thinking: if i need to learn how to work on alu, and make mistakes , let it be on old sheats, so i wont be sorry if i screw up. - just go on another sheat.

The plan was to create handles pieces each separatly and put them on existing case.

    here is the case:

1st i used hamer on sheats to even the bumps, then i used sander to smooth the surface.

After cutting the right size and bending it on table edge, i used big rotation tool (lol i dont know english name flex-something) to cutut out the hole wich will make handles.

    Then bended the cutout...

    and here it is:

ok then i cut central layer, bend it and see roughly how it all works...

unfortunetly construction problem occured, All pieces were influencing each other and all shoud be in harmony 4 it to work, but i dint have any fixed point to start from....

all that made me to change my direction into another path: to make from 1 piece as much as posible.

EDIT: And sorry bout my english...

Looking good - but you may want to use some thick (3mm or better) alumimium for the outer shell - if to thin, it will not support the structure that well....

The ones on the original Apple case is more like 5mm...

    Keep up the good work!

Holy sh*t! That is incredible eXplode. :) I agree with MrBean in that you should probably use thicker aluminium if you can. The G5 is made of some kind of aluminium alloy that is at least 3mm and very tough. Or maybe some reinforcing around the handles?

Where did you get the dimensions from? They look spot on.

Cant wait to see this project evolve.

    Cyp.

ps i reckon Apple should be giving us G5 modders something back for all the publicity its been getting here recently!

    @all - Thx guys!

@mrbean - Thickness was my primary concern in the 1st place. that was the reason i went separte handles in begining... but, legs were pritty strong, so i give it a go. since im learning, i'm using material that i already have, so if all goes well, then i can go buy some thicker alu and make 1 final outer shell.

@cyprio - i found real dimensions on web, tryed to go as close as possible, even changed case 4 it :) differences are not more than 2 cm. So once i got main dimensions, i just measured the rest from pictures - handles and stuff. lol i even counted the holes on the front :p from ur pictures

i agree on apple giving us something, but i dunwanna their hardware, just casings :p
i tryed to call local apple distributers and c how much woud g5 casing cost... lolol it was about 400EUR LOLOLOLOLOLO! 400EUR = CPU+ MBO+ VGA +RAM They are crazy!

    cheears!

Greate. It's easy, if you don't have a G5 case and you can't buy it, you should made if by yourself :D . I'll looking on that.

So this is the new case. More solid, almost perfect dimensions.

after a bit of slicing it :p 4 fanhole and optics.

I love your sheet metal bending and the idea!
You need a logo of an apple with a BIG worm inside! Superglue won't hold well when the case flexes.

    Hola!

    @cheapskate
Thx man. The worm apple woud be suitable 4 some "funny" mod. Thats not the path i choose. even tho i considered going another fruit like "kiwi" instead of apple.

Time to move on central piece - aka "patience"

i coudnt go mesh front cos top area is not perforated, so im gonna use other perforated piece to make straighter holes. then drill with hand drill. ~ 5+ hours

This was my first attempt, i knew it would go wrong and it did. 1st i made big mistake by not cheking 4 steady hold, vibrations made my screws unscrew a bit until i made mistake.
Also, holes are too big making central piece look too crude. So next time smaller holes and more patience. Also i know 1 big perforated piece woud be much beteer and precise 4 this job, but i just coudnt get one.

Dont give up explode! You will be the first scratch built G5!

The holes on the G5 are 3mm by the way. Dont know if that is going to be too much work for you though?

God, this is almost disturbing the sense of attention and details spent on this idea/mod. Excellent job!

    Your 'failure' looks awesome!
You may soon topple Cyprio's record for most holes drilled in a mod.
